United We Dance 2010

Sunday 28th November 2010

9th GLBTIQ Multicultural Dance Party

This year the proceeds will be split between the Lesbian & Gay Archives and The Gay &
Lesbian Foundation of Australia (GALFA).
The volunteers have come from members of various Melbourne GLBTIQ Multicultural groups
but these days the event is run under the auspice of the Australian GLBTIQ Multicultural
Council. (AGMC Inc).
United We Dance has several purposes. One is to demonstrate to the wider community that
no matter what our ethnicity, we can socialize and party together in harmony. Two is to raise
funds for our community. Three is obvious – to have a damn good party.
What makes this night different from all other dance parties is the range of multicultural
content in the music and floorshows. This year we will have two DJ’s who will spin the
hottest in Euro, Middle Eastern and Asian dance music. The floor shows range from dance,
belly dancing, live music, drag kings and queens and everything in between.
This year we have renowned Greek singer, songwriter and composer Stelios Antoniou and
many other special performers and dancers.
United We Dance is on Sunday 28 November at 7.30pm and entry is only $15.00.

Venue:

The Market 143 Commercial Rd South Yarra. Entry includes drink on arrival and door prizes.

About UWD

July 26th, 2010

United We Dance was born in 2002 as a result of obvious cultural and religious problems in the world following the tragedies of 9/11 and Bali. We as a GLBTIQ multicultural community in Melbourne wanted to set an example and show that we could live in harmony (and party together of course!)

At the same time it was decided that all funds raised on the night would be directed back into our community. Such recipients in the past have been Bent TV, JOY Melbourne, Positive Attitude, the David Williams Fund, the Asia Pacific Outgames, the Australian GLBTIQ Multicultural Council Inc. and the Victorian Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby. To date we have raised almost $12500 for GLBTIQ charities in Melbourne.

The night is fully organised by volunteers and all performers on the night donate their time. The event is primarily a multicultural dance party and all music and performances have a multicultural GLBTIQ flair. United We Dance has been a recipient of a Rainbow Award for best event for the year and each event attractsover 400 people from all backgrounds.

Quote from Sally Goldner (Treasurer of VGLRL)

“May I also echo thanks already expressed by Stephen & Hayley on behalf of

the VGLRL for your huge support – ultimately United We Dance’s contribution

will save at least one life somewhere by reducing discrimination and prejudice.”
